I Felt Like a Failure When I Did This…

Decades ago, I was always told there was to be no emotion in the workplace.  

Just work hard.  

Nobody owes you anything.  

Don’t cry and certainly don’t show any emotion.  

Suck it up, buttercup.

Okay, fine, I did that. But it cost me my health, my sanity, my joy and my authenticity. I felt like a robot. I also felt like a failure on so many other levels even though I appeared “successful” from the outside.  

I felt like I was living a scene from Devil Wears Prada, being Meryl Streep.  

But guess what? Change is finally here, and it’s bringing a refreshing new (and finally a feminine) perspective to leadership – one that celebrates vulnerability.  

I finally overcame the imposter syndrome and ditched my suit of armor to live in my authenticity as a woman.  

Remember when showing emotion in the office or at work was a no-go? Well, those days are fading fast, thank goodness. Today’s leadership landscape is being reshaped by a powerful trait – vulnerability. It’s about trading the hard, linear poker face for authenticity and exchanging stoicism for empathy. 

Brené Brown, a pioneer in vulnerability research, defines it as embracing uncertainty, risk, and emotional exposure. Her studies reveal that this openness leads to authentic connections, resilience, and a fulfilling life. It’s a courageous act, not a weakness.

Being in business is changing and embracing our humanity is key [whether you’re an entrepreneur, in corporate OR running your house. Vulnerability isn’t just about adapting to change; it’s about being the catalyst for it.
